The Conflict
John West is making a second attempt at liquidating Josephine County forest properties with a haste hard not to see in the light of his pending recall vote, scheduled for a week after the set closing date for the land sale. The commissioner is making decisions with immediate and generational impact on the sovereignty and prosperity of Josephine County citizens and businesses while he is currently under multiple OCGE (Oregon County of Governmental Ethics) investigations with a vote to recall him slated for January. (7,538 of 6,445 signatures required for a recall vote were submitted.) Locals disputing this rushed sale are highly suspicious of potential misuses of the office for personal financial gain based on previous ownership of neighboring property, family ties to potential bidders and a longstanding history of personal dealings in the timber industry (details below).
What We're Asking
A Three Month Delay On The Land Sale
We are asking for county commissioners to lead democratically with citizens' concerns and needs taken into consideration. What we’re fighting for right NOW is the preservation of the democratic process in our county. We want your help in demanding that county commissioners work for the good of the people and are transparent in their management of the county. We want thorough, thoughtful, responsible and transparent deliberation.
In regards to the Pipe Fork and Josephine County Forest Commercial land liquidation; we are asking commissioners to PAUSE the land sale. We believe that until the Recall vote of John West is conducted, commissioners need to halt any controversial decisions. There are many questions that deserve to be answered before such a massive and lasting decision is made. Especially when there are ongoing investigations about the decision makers themselves. (The questions we find most pressing are shared in the “Key Questions” section referenced below.)
Regardless of your opinion on forest management practices of the county. We believe the common ground that we as residents share is preserving the integrity of the democratic process and the desire to be represented by good faith leadership. These decisions need to be made thoughtfully and responsibly, with transparency and in collaboration with good faith leadership that we trust to stand for the highest good of the people of Josephine County.
Rushing this sale without sufficient public input undermines these democratic principles and risks favoring private interests over the public good. If the sale is truly in the public’s best interest, delaying it will only allow more time to gather public input and ensure accountability.
🎯 ACTION BREAK: For those who want to take the time, there's a lot more information and sources below to substantiate our concerns, but before we get into the weeds with that we want to make clear what you can DO to help us pause the land sale.

Call to Action for Josephine County Residents
We are asking Josephine County residents to attend the Board of County Commissioners meeting on Wednesday, November 27th at 9 am at Anne Basker Auditorium. Everyone can have three minutes for public comments. Help us demonstrate that we are paying attention. We need as many residents as possible to speak up and remind the commissioners that their oath of office is to have the best interests of the public in their decisions. Public input should help guide the commissioners in knowing what best serves the county, and their dismissive nature of the public leads us to believe there are backdoor deals manipulating their decisions. Please come out and protect our county from going bankrupt by commissioners mis-using their positions for their personal financial gain!
If you can’t make in person to show your support, please do the next best thing and write.

Show up on Wednesday, November 27, at 9 am at the Anne G. Basker Auditorium (600 NW 6th Street, Grants Pass). One of the best ways to show support is with your physical presence, and your voice. There’s opportunity for everyone to speak at these meetings, but even just showing up and standing in solidarity is powerful display that that we are paying attention! We also understand that people have jobs, and these public meetings are not held at the most convenient times. If you can’t make in person to show your support, please do the next best thing and write.

If you feel moved to take any kind of action on this, please also share it with others who you think may do the same. The time we have left to speak up is measured in days. If can get enough last minute show of support to pause the sale, we preserve the right to make sober decisions about our most precious assets.
Why Pipe Fork Matters
Closing Remarks
As stated, this is not a letter about logging or conservation—it’s about our right to participate in the decisions that shape the future of our community. The public has already called for Commissioner West’s recall, which only strengthens the argument for delaying this sale. If John West’s recall vote confirms that he is unfit to represent us, why should he be trusted to oversee such a critical decision on his way out of office?
The sovereignty and prosperity of this valley is worth the time it takes to make thoughtful, responsible and sober decisions, especially on matters with generational impact, in collaboration with good faith representatives. These assets should be weighed and debated with the input of the public they affect, not determined unilaterally by an official facing serious allegations. Let’s stand together to ensure that our future, and that of our children, is not sold off without a fair and transparent process.
Key Questions
There’s a lot to know and think about as we consider how to utilize the land assets of Josephine County. The letter above is single pointed on the topic of the current decision making process itself, and our advocacy to slow it down. Time is of the essence right now, if this decision gets made in haste with no one looking, questions of long term profitability, sustainability, health impacts, fire safety impacts, property value impacts, etc…don’t matter. None of it matters if the land is sold and gone before the turkey timer pops on Thanksgiving dinner. But if you want to take more time to better understand the key questions surrounding this land sale, we’ve compiled that information here.
